Bonny the Superdog
Sterilization project of the Animal Shelter Bonaire, Dutch Antilles-
November 28th, 2009Bonny the Superdog, Success story
On May 15 the Animal Shelter started a large scale campaign to reduce the amount of stray and street dogs on Bonaire.
This project is called, “Bonny, the Superdog,” and so far more than 300 dogs have been sterilized. Number 300 was the dog from the Wing Cheung Supermarket on Kaya Korona. The dog’s name is Wong – a sturdy Rottweiler look-a-like who had given birth to a fairly large amount of puppies. Wong’s owners felt it was time for Wong to retire and decided to have her sterilized. The operation went well and when Wong got home she was welcomed with a big bowl of chicken legs.
Every dog a Superdog! So, in the meantime more than 300 dogs have been sterilized, but the goal of “Bonny, the Superdog” sterilization project is to sterilize 500 dogs. This way, the Bonaire Animal Shelter hopes to contribute to changing many dogs’ lives into Superdog lives!
For more information about this free sterilization campaign you can contact the Shelter at: Dierenasiel Bonaire, Kaminda Lagun 26, Bonaire.

These puppies were left behind in a Polar beer box on the parking lot of the Animal Shelter. The dog owner did not sterilize his female dog and disposed of the tiny pups in this inhumane manner.

The Bonaire Animal Shelter also picks up and returns dogs and cats to their owners after the operations.
On this picture you can see dog Kenia waiting for her sterilization. The owner of Kenia attached owner a “sterilization tag” to the collar of the dog, so the shelter staff know where and when the dog has te be returned.

On Bonaire many puppies are born each year. One of the reasons that there are too many dogs are allowed to run loose and cause pregnacies at a young age.On Bonaire we have to put to sleep about 1000 pets each year. These animals could make good pets.
Also this month the Animal Shelter has been populated with many more new puppies than it is used to.
This is a real problem, there are simply too many puppies being produced without a thought for their future.
The answer to the problem of too many dogs is spaying and neutering.

This stray dog and her 8 puppies were found in an abondoned house in Antriol, Bonaire. The owners of this house moved and left their dog, a pregnant female, behind. Fortunately friendly neighbours rescued this dog and brought her and the puppies to the Bonaire Animal Shelter. To reduce the overload of pet animals on Bonaire, the shelter promotes spaying and neutering of pets to prevent unwanted litters. Adult shelter animals are sterilized before adoption. When adopting a pup or kitten, the new owner is required to sign a commitment to have that pet sterilized when it is about 6 months old.
